The warmth, whimsy and humorous wisdom of Winnie the Pooh were introduced to Walt Disney by his daughter Diane, who loved the beguiling books written by A. A. Milne and illustrated by E. H. Shepherd. Walt sought to obtain film rights as early as 1937, and secured them in 1961. As film production began, Walt Disney directed his animators to maintain the whimsical style of Milne and Shepherd, but to give Pooh more definition on screen. So, Disney artists made a red t-shirt part of Pooh’s permanent design. Today, it’s his signature apparel and to all who love him, a symbol of his cheery friendly nature.
Pooh’s first featurette, Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree debuted in 1966. Since that time, Pooh and his friends have starred in 7 films and over 30 videos and are known worldwide as ambassadors of friendship.
